Women’s League of Burma

The WLB, an umbrella corporation, was formed for the purpose of elevating the status of women and advocating for a “peaceful and just society in Myanmar.” Generally aligned in opposition to Myanmar’s ruling government and largely operating in the Thai-Myanmar border area until recently, the WLB is comprised of eleven member organizations: the Burmese Women’s Union (BWU), the Kachin Women’s Association-Thailand (KWAT), the Karen Women’s Organization (KWO), the Kuki Women’s Human Rights Organization (KWHRO), the Lahu Women’s Organization (LWO), the Palaung Women’s Organization (PWO), the Pa-O Women’s Union (PWU), the Rakhaing Women’s Union (RWU), the Shan Women’s Action Network (SWAN), the Tavoy Women’s Union (TWU), and the Women’s Rights and Welfare Association of Myanmar (WRWAB). The group’s advocacy work encompasses economic issues of particular interest to rural communities and ethnic minorities, such as land confiscation, forced resettlements, and investments that the group contends are ecologically irresponsible or unsustainable.

Karen Women’s Organization (KWO)

Formed in 1949, the KWO has a membership of over 49,000 Karen women. KWO is a community-based organization that performs development and relief work chiefly in refugee camps on the Thai border and with IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) and women inside Myanmar. Over the years, the group has expanded its focus from social welfare generally to an effort to encourage awareness of women’s rights and participation in the community decision-making and political processes. KWO actively supports efforts to eliminate violence against women, particularly within seven refugee camps and five districts inside Karen State.
