Cambodian Women in Science and Technology

The Cambodian Women in Science and Technology community on Facebook has nearly 3,000 members. The group supports women in the ICT field, starting meaningful discussions about women in science and technology. Although limited information about the group can be found on the internet, the photos on Facebook show participants, sometimes numbering over 30 women, in seminar and collaborative settings participating in presentations entitled: “How to balance life and work as a tech lady”; “Why technology needs more women”; and “How to increase the number of females in Computing?”

Women’s Resource Center (WRC Cambodia)

WRC Cambodia provides support and informal education for girls and young women to shift their employment from the informal to the formal sector. In collaboration with Heinrich Böll Stiftung Cambodia, the Center provides a Riel Change Financial Literacy Workshop, educating women on financial literacy and basic money making skills. This workshop, available to women working in the informal sector without regular incomes, insurances or benefits, seeks to enable women to support themselves, their families, and their communities through financial literacy, and through that knowledge, foster financial independence and a shift to women-based household decision-making.

Cambodian Non-Timber Forest Products Development Organization

The Cambodian NTFP Development Organization is a local Cambodian NGO, supporting over 500 non-timber forests products (NTFP) handicrafts artisans gain access to markets through their CANDO Market Access Center. The program teaches marketing and pricing to entrepreneurs from indigenous and rural communities in Cambodia, linking producers and wholesale and end-user buyers both domestically and internationally. The Center plans to expand to offer marketing and sales assistance to producers, micro-enterprises, and co-ops throughout Cambodia.

WECREATE|CAMBODIA

A StartUp Cup/U.S. State Department Initiative, WEis in the process of building a Women’s Entrepreneurship Center in Phnom Penh, designed to help women entrepreneurs expand their business by teaching them tools to overcome barriers faced in the market which dissuade female entrepreneurs’ businesses from flourishing. With a vision towards bringing influential female entrepreneurs who have successfully grown their businesses into a forum to mentor young entrepreneurs, the organization hopes to enhance and diversify Cambodia’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Cambodia Women Entrepreneurs Association

The Cambodia Women Entrepreneurs Association provides a platform for women entrepreneurs and MSME owners to bring concerns and build consensus on policy issues affecting the business environment and competitiveness of women-owned businesses in Cambodia. The group also addresses deficits in market information and business education in Cambodia. Providing business services and networking opportunities, CWEA aims to help its members level the playing field in the private sector.

Social & Economic Developers Association (SEDA-Laos)

SEDA is a local non-profit NGO established to provide social and economic opportunities for the poor. The group serves remote and rural areas in the areas of education, HIV/AIDS prevention, medical training, and agribusiness. It is also in the process of developing a microfinance project specifically to assist low-income, single women to create financial opportunity and independence, helping these women to develop small sustainable businesses and services and manage their finances.

Gender Development Association

The GDG is an umbrella organization established in 1991 by the Lao Women’s Union, UNICEF, and international NGOs. It has around 20 members who represent international NGOs working in Lao PDR and organizes forum meetings for coordination and sharing of experiences in the area of gender and development programming in Lao PDR. They provide training and consulting services in addition to their internal activities.

Lao Businesswomen’s Association (BWA)

The BWA is the largest association of business and professional women in Lao PDR, registered as branch of Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The organization’s purpose is to provide opportunities for women entrepreneurs to develop their management and business skills in an effort to enhance growth and competiveness of their enterprises.

Local Enterprise Applications and Products Scheme (LEAP)

Launched in 2010, the LEAP program provides financing to businesses in order to help them develop technology-related products and applications with commercial and export potential. Eligible applicants must have a qualified project team with a firm business plan and can be SMEs, students, or researchers. Businesses are eligible for up to B$150,000 (USD$111,000).

Council of Women of Brunei Darussalam (CWBD)

Established in 1984 and based in Bandar Seri Begawan, the CWBD acts as a national body representing the views of women in the economy. CWBD acts as an umbrella organization with 13 member associations, each formed to support certain aspects of women’s welfare and interests. CWBD’s specific support for women entrepreneurs is led by CWBD’s Committee on Business and Entrepreneurship, which sponsors a number of services and activities, including events pertaining to social enterprise development.
